For me, the endearing memory of this Olympic games certainly has to be watching Usain Bolt destroy the competition and all other sprinters ever in the finals of the men’s 200m and, even more so, in the 100m. My favourite bit of the broadcast was when Donovan Bailey, himself a former Olympic champion and world record holder at 100m was asked, “Can you put into perspective what Usain...

Great Olympic moments on YouTube →
Jason Kottke has collated YouTube links for a great selection of classic Olympic moments: One of the best ways to watch the Olympics is to chase down all the references made by NBC’s commentators on YouTube and watch them in addition to (or instead of) the regular telecast. Incidentally, one of my favourite ways to watch the Olympics is to find a broadcast of one of the more obscure...

BrokenTV's Infuriatingly Right-On Olympic Update →
Continuing WYWG’s grand, two day Olympic round-up (fewer days than Obama day; it is only sports, after all), go check out BrokenTV’s Infuriatingly Right-On Olympic Update, where they reorder the medal table according to each country’s population size. Thus truly deciding which country is best. (Then go read their Infuriatingly Lacklustre Olympic Finale, where they update...

So Nothing Can Eat My Shoes →
A hilarious and comforting list of people’s “superstitions / foolish consistencies / lightweight OCD behaviors.” Mine is that if I’m going up a staircase where the flights turn back on themselves, I have to make a 3/4 turn the wrong way between each flight. Otherwise I would get all tangled up, you see?

Nikon D90: Yes Please! →
WANT ONE! You can get me one for Christmas. If you all chip in it will not be that expensive. (I wouldn’t bother watching the pointless video. It is basically just Chase and all his team gloating that they get to play with it before it’s released.) (via Daring Fireball)

Did Michael Phelps Get a Gold Medal for a Race He...
I read somewhere once that Slate has a tendancy to make all its headlines into leading questions which imply the opposite of generally held wisdom. Which certainly seems to be the technique applied in Monday’s DID MICHAEL PHELPS GET A GOLD MEDAL FOR A RACE HE LOST? The article bangs on for a while about touchpads; concedes that according to the rules in place, Phelps did win the race;...

English is Hard
jacobd: “I take it you already know, Of tough and bough and cough and dough. Others may stumble, but not you, On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through. Well done! And now you wish, perhaps, To learn of less familiar traps. Beware of heard, a dreadful word, That looks like beard and sounds like bird. And dead - it’s said like bed, not bead, For goodness’ sake, don’t call it ‘deed’! Watch...

I was hoping that this page: How to make an Air Chair would give me some helpful hints on how to do this, but it is somewhat unhelpful in that respect.

Apparently this guy invented the flat-ground ollie. I think it would be fair to say that he is pretty good at skateboarding. HE CAN DO A HANDSTAND ON HIS SKATEBOARD for cryin’ out loud. And that is one of the least impressive tricks in this video. I have still yet to see a skateboarder in real life that is not rubbish. (via Chippy)

Being a bit of a connoisseur of Dr Pepper (The real king of pop) I was aware that there is a special more delicious (I know… hard to believe) version of the drink that you can buy if you go to Dublin, Texas. The reason that Dublin Dr Pepper is supposedly so amazingly delicious is that it is sweetened with pure, virgin cane sugar, instead of the disgusting and, frankly, evil corn syrup. ...

On the Objectified film blog (from the people that brought you the excellent Helvetica) comes Marian Bantjes’s ode to her new toothbrush: “If everything in our lives were afforded the design attention that my toothbrush has, we would sit in chairs that floated while tickling our troubled backs, have tables that yielded at our aching elbows while remaining firm on top, walk on floors...

Up to 139 so far, and still going strong. Most of them aren’t actually rules, of course, but that’s splitting hairs, really. The captions to the photos are the funniest bit.

While I’m on a TERRORIST-ELECTRICITY-LEAPING-OUT-OF-THE-SKY tip, here’s a slightly disturbing video of someone getting hit by a lightning strike. jacobd: johnoday: “Because you insisted, here’s the unedited screaming version. I also added video from a minute before the lightning struck so you can get an idea of how hard it was raining. From what i understand, it went through my...

Wow. I mean, seriously. Wow. The improved resolution, dynamic range, and various editing effects are all impressive enough, but when, at the end of this video, they remove a parking sign and lamppost from in front of some footage of a flower shop… Wow. (Tip of the hat to Daring Fireball)

This article is way too geeky for you to want to read, but I had to post it anyway, because it coins the best neologism of 2008 thus far: awesompersand. Genius. If I were the owner of this ampersand blog I would snap up http://awesompersand.com post haste.
