The Sad Song
I first saw this video by Fredo Viola back in 2006, when Neil Gaiman linked to it and to the ensuing furore—the video became wildly popular, and Viola’s ISP sent him a bill for $10,000.
I thought of it again this week, and after a brief search found Fredo Viola’s current website, so I thought I would share it with you.
It’s a music video created entirely from 15 second clips that Viola took with his digital camera, and then edited together to create something amazing.
I think it was Neil Gaiman that once wrote something vaguely along the lines of “I would be surprised to hear that a great new novel had been written with a Mont Blanc pen on an antique mahogany writing desk; I would never be surprised to hear that a novel had been written in biro on the back of envelopes.” The point being that creativity doesn’t require expensive implements. It just requires you to go and do it.
The Sad Song is a wonderful example of that principle, and every time I remember it, search for and watch it, I am inspired again.
(While you’re on the site, have a quick look at his other videos too. Especially The Turn - ghost cluster in the Cluster Videos section.)
