I tie all of Marco’s ties, so I’m looking forward to trying out something new. Apparently I’ve only been doing a Four in Hand knot.
After some experimentation, Tiff just leveled up, choosing to upgrade my standard tie knot to the Shell Knot. And I just learned that my best man, Mark, gave me a Windsor for my wedding. (It was a great knot. I just had to know.)
I didn’t even realise first one (which I knew as just a standard tie knot) had a name. I’m guessing the reason it’s so ubiquitous is because you can loosen it all the off your neck, whereupon it will untie itself. The others you have to actually untie.
Also, this diagram doesn’t make it clear how ridiculously fat your knot is if you do either of the Windsors. This can be good or bad, depending on the situation. A Full Windsor looked pretty ridiculous when tied round my skinny schoolboy neck.
I’d also never heard of the Shell knot (also, it appears, known as the Pratt, or Shelby) before. I’m gonna try it out the next time I am within reach of a tie.
